Dental Care Guide for My Children
As a general dentist, we recommend you bring your child in for a dental examination as soon as they are over a year old and have their first tooth. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends this so a child can become accustomed to visiting a dental office. While at first we will not technically clean their teeth, we will inspect their mouth to ensure everything is growing in properly. As they reach preschool age, we can start to clean their teeth and provide them with additional care.
In our cosmetic dentist office, there are certain procedures we recommend for keeping a child’s teeth healthy. One is a fluoride treatment. In this procedure, we place fluoride on clean teeth and let it sit there for a few minutes. After being absorbed, your child’s teeth will be strengthened and their risk of developing cavities will be reduced by 30 percent. When creating a dental care guide for my children, this is something we promote because a 30 percent reduction can make a significant difference in the current and future oral health of our patients.
Our goal is to keep your child’s teeth clean and healthy so we can prevent cavities, infections, toothaches, and the need to visit us for emergency dentist care. While we do offer it, we would prefer to help our young patients remain healthy in the first place. This is one reason we recommend they wear a mouth guard while playing sports. However, if your child does damage a tooth, we can restore it using dental bonding, dental fillings, or dental crowns.
At home, you can help improve their health by brushing their teeth for two minutes at a time, twice per day, with a fluoride toothpaste. Be sure to also floss at least once per day to remove the plaque that has built up in between their teeth.
Dental Care Guide for My Children: Orthodontics
Many parents ask us if there is anything they can do to prevent their children from having a need for braces. We recommend you focus on preventative care and keeping their baby teeth healthy and intact. This will prevent early tooth loss and the potential overcrowding problems that it creates. Otherwise, we can watch for how your child’s teeth are growing in and make a recommendation for whether or not they will need orthodontic care.
